All are connected by way of your wiring infrastructure to your "main" system (quite often the home theatre), where you benefit by sharing components such as media server, XM satellite radio, AM/FM tuner and / or CD player. There are a variety of different distribution and control methods. Your system can be as simple as a volume control in each room; you may actually have remote IR control of your system from multiple locations; or you might even choose a "multi-zone" system where you can listen to different music sources in more than one area (CD in kitchen, XM radio on patio) at the same time.
